- Requirements: YWCA Cambridge staff members applying must have or be working towards their RECE; Child and Youth Care Diploma or Degree, Recreation and Leisure Services Diploma or Degree or be a current member of Ontario College of Teachers.
- This position is set to be with the School Age program, running a before and after school program at each location (with an added 1-2 hours in a support staff role).
Job Summary
The Educator is responsible developing, implementing and maintaining a high quality child care program that meets the needs of each child as an individual.
Responsibility:
Using the Reggio Emilia Philosophy in combination with the YWCA Program Statement and Implementation Policies, develop and implement a high quality program in which children are valued as capable and competent.
Duties:
1. Develop and maintain program webs that reflect all activities of the centre in a full range of curriculum areas - this includes conducting weekly curriculum sheets.
2. Provide provocations for children in order to observe where their interests lie.
3. Listen to children’s interactions to determine their interests and equipment they might require.
4. Scaffold on existing learning.
5. Provide documentation for the children to revisit and to form the basis of discussions with parents/guardians.
Responsibility:
Health and safety of all children in the program.
1. Responsible for the appearance and sanitary conditions of the learning environment.
2. Ensure that equipment and furnishings are kept in good repair and of sufficient quantity.
3. Maintain a safe, healthy environment for adults and children.
4. Administer first aid as required.
5. Work with centre supervisor for administration of medication as required.
Responsibility:
Develop positive and supportive communications and relationships with the children, parents, team members and the community.
Duties:
1. Provide an environment in which everyone has a sense of belonging.
2. Keep documentation current and use this as a basis for discussion with parents/guardians at the end of the day.
3. Keep a daily journal for your designated program and communicate with centre team members in the centre communication book.
4. Participate in staff/team meetings.
5. Participate in parent/guardian events for example, open houses, fundraising, family get-togethers and bulletin boards.
6. Communicate with parents/guardians regularly regarding program, child development and any other issues of concern to the parent and/or educators.
7. Assist with or provide for the assessment of children as necessary.
8. Maintain good communication and a co-operative working relationship with community agencies including schools.
9. Foster a commitment to the YWCA staff team and promote the programs and services in the community.
10. Document and report suspected child abuse.
Responsibilities:
Carry out administrative duties as assigned.
Duties:
1. Follow YWCA Personnel Policies and Procedures and the Child Care Policies and Procedures; knowing how they apply to the early child care educator position.
2. Comply with all municipal, regional and provincial requirements related to operating a licensed child care program in Ontario.
3. Assist the Supervisor with the supervision and evaluation of volunteers and students in the program.
4. Assist with the annual inventory and provide input into purchase of supplies.
5. Attend meetings as requested by the Supervisor and/or Director of Child Care Services.
6. Assume an equal share of the staff housekeeping responsibilities.
7. May be required to undertake other related duties from time to time due to the absence of other members of the child care department.
Responsibility:
Keep knowledge current with respect to Early Childhood Education.
Duties:
1. Participate in the development of personal goals. These may be the same as goals set for the College of ECEs.
2. Participate in professional development related to these goals.
3. Participate in and reflect upon Focused Observations.
4. Participate in training opportunities and events provided by YWCA Cambridge.
5. Participate in quality initiatives as developed by the Region of Waterloo i.e. centre goals.
6. Attend regular staff meetings as set by the Supervisor and/or management team.
Accountability
Accountable to the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor of the centre as well as the Director of Child Care Services.

● Member in good standing of the College of Early Childhood Educators (RECE) or Equivalent
