Supervisor, Children’s Centre, Temporary Full-time

TITLE:  Supervisor, Children’s Centre, Temporary Full-time (for approximately 24 months)
LOCATION:  Elmira Children’s Centre, Elmira 
SALARY/WAGE: $70,488.60 – $88,106.20 per annum/$38.73 - $48.41 per hour

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: 
  • Administrates an integrated Children’s Centre for young children using the HighScope Curriculum Approach, in a manner that provides for their optimum growth and development, within the legislation of the Day Nurseries Act, Child and Family Services Act, and Regional policy
  • Maintains a physical environment to conform to government standards of safety, cleanliness, and health 
  • Coordinates the teamwork of qualified early childhood education and support staff while maintaining legislated child to staff ratios
  • Identifies and secures purchased services necessary for facility maintenance. Coordinates and documents the enrollment of all children to the centre according to admission policies, and maintains all children's records
  • Supervises the provision of specialized services for and special needs children
  • Supervises developmental screening of all children and facilitates formal assessments through referral to community agencies
  • Supervises menu planning, including food ordering, preparation, serving, and storage
  • Maintains records of staff medicals, vacation, training, and overtime
  • Supervises the administration of prescribed medications for children attending the centre
  • Documents and reports child abuse
  • Directly supervises a staff team comprised of an Assistant Supervisor/Resource Teacher, Child Care Teachers and a Cook, as well as part-time and contract staff
  • Standing, bending, stooping, and heavy lifting are required 50% of the time. Work requires periods of prolonged sitting and heavy visual concentration 10% of the day
  • Uses a computer a few times a week when entering statistics or preparing flyers, newsletters, and notices, requiring steady focus on a video display terminal
  • Work is performed to meet inflexible deadlines and is subject to certain peaks

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED:  
  • Thorough practical knowledge of the developmental and educational needs of children, diagnostic screening tools, community resources, and research methods, normally acquired through the attainment of a Bachelor level degree specializing in Early Childhood Education or proven equivalent education, plus a minimum of three years direct child care experience as required in accordance with the Day Nurseries Act
  • Must be a Registered Member of the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures, including the Day Nurseries Act and regulations pertaining to Child Care, as well as Regional policies and procedures, municipal by-laws, Occupational Health & Safety, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy, and other related legislation
  • Advanced knowledge and training in the HighScope Curriculum approach would be an asset
  • Must possess a valid standard First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to organize work and its performance by others
  • Ability to instruct or train staff in specific work methods or procedures
  • Ability to establish supportive relationships with families
  • Human relations skills to advise and supervise staff and participate as an effective team member
  • Reads policies, legislation, and professional publications related to child development, assessment tools, training materials, statistics, memorandums, letters, forms, memorandums, assessments, and referrals to maintain current knowledge in the field
  • Composes reports, letters to outside agencies and memorandums to staff, and meeting minutes; as well as maintains and updates attendance records, personnel files, program participant files, and policy and procedure manuals
  • Responds to telephone calls from parents and members of the general public, including inquiries regarding program information and conflict resolution
  • Convenes and coordinates case conferences for special needs and handicapped children, or supervises staff participation in same
  • Must provide an acceptable Police Records Check in order to ensure suitability for working with vulnerable populations
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization
