EMERGENCY SHELTER WORKER II
(Unionized)
We are currently seeking temporary full-time Emergency Shelter Worker II to join our team. The purpose of this program is to provide a welcoming and safe space for unsheltered people.  The primary job of Emergency Shelter Worker is to welcome unsheltered people and ensure their comfort and safety, and to support their connection with the Housing Stability System in the Region of Waterloo.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • No requirement for a social work degree or diploma; however, preference will be given
            to those who have relevant education and experience in a shelter or similar setting. This
            is an excellent opportunity for graduates, volunteers, and those who want to build their
            career in the field of social work/services. You may have experience in one or more of
            the following: Support Worker, Housing, Vulnerable People, Social Worker, Community
            Development, Volunteer, Housing Support Worker, Challenging Behaviour, Residential
            Care Worker, Night shelter, Security Guard etc. 
  • Standard First Aid/CPR Level C certification required before commencing employment
  • Acceptable Vulnerable sector police check required
  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Welcome and greet clients as they arrive and provide mats to sleep on
  • Answer any calls or inquiries
  • Oversee the safety of the service users and security of the building and grounds 
  • Oversee behaviour on the property and ensuring that all clients observe the rules of the temporary shelter, with particular regard to times when they are entering and leaving the building
  • Monitor the environment and alerting colleagues (staff and volunteers) in any instance where intervention may be required
  • Follow all policies and procedures
  • Adhere to health and safety requirements
  • Respond to any emergencies, informing supervisor/on-call staff and any other services as necessary
  • Help keep the shelter space clean and orderly
  • Other duties as assigned
 
All YW employees are expected to demonstrate respect, empathy, and accountability to the people who access our services, and to attend work regularly as regular attendance is critical to maintaining the highest quality and level of service expected in delivering services.  


WAGE
 
Approximately $21.269 per hour to start), plus shift premium ($0.35) for night shift, with an additional 2% in lieu of benefits
 
HOURS
 
Afternoon shift from 3:30pm to 12:00am and
Night shift from 11:30pm to 10:30am (2 to 3 nights per week)
 
SHIFTS
 
Rotating shifts with every other weekend off

As soon as possible

END DATE
 
September 30, 2021
