Reports To: Family Literacy Manager
Summary
This position is responsible, under the direction of the Manager the planning, development and implementation of the preschool portion (birth to age 6) portion of the Get Set Learn program at the Waterloo Christian Reformed Church. This position deals with the children in- a- hands on manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

To plan and provide a program which meets the needs of children from birth to 6 years of age through:
A safe, emotionally supportive and nurturing environment,
A physical set up that encourages active exploration,
Activities/interactions that encourage language acquisition,
routines with some structure
To work with parents/caregivers and other staff in helping children foster independence
To identify children with special needs, consulting with parent/caregiver and the GSL Facilitator and other involved staff on how to best serve that family.
Act as a resource for families, providing resource materials where possible and information when needed
Assist in the referral and linking to other supports as appropriate
Responsible for the safety of all the children present in the program.
Maintains all records of the participants and their children. Ensures all necessary paperwork is properly and timely completed.
Ensure all Health & Safety guidelines are followed.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Competencies:
Must have good organizational skills to be able to keep abreast of documentation and location of same.
Must be able to multi task to ensure the safety of all the children under their direct supervision, within the program guidelines.

Education and/or Experience
Must hold a current registered Early Childhood Educator membership with the College of Early Childhood Educators or be eligible to apply (preferred).
1-3 year’s experience working in programs with children from birth to age 6, preferably in a community setting.
Experience working with marginalized families
Language Skills
Must be able to read and write in English fluently.
Computer Skills
Proficiency in MS Office, primarily Word preferred

Due to the nature of the position’s one on one and group interaction with the children birth to 6, the physical demands of this position involve:
sitting at child’s level and bending to child’s level for much of the 2 hour program
the nature of the classroom and the activities provided involves the incumbent to be able to alternate between sitting and standing
participating in circle time for 20 minutes by sitting on floor or low chair, also involving active arm movement and body movements such as twirling.
occasional requirement to monitor the children’s activities out of doors for 1 hour increments
lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally, although up to 20lbs more regularly and usual
responding and monitoring the classroom room and moving around the room quickly to diffuse situations that could potentially cause harm or disruption of the program.
The time for performing the job responsibilities, directly with children, would be for 2 hours, 2 times per week.

Early Childhood Educator Job Description
As part of the team nature of the job the Child Programmer will also be expected to assist with the preparation, set up and take down of the classroom and learning centres involving:
daily scrubbing, moving of room equipment (mainly child tables and chairs) and program supplies
set up and take down of literacy kits and supplies
wiping down of toys as needed

Waterloo Christian Reformed Church (209 Bearinger Road)
Program dates: Monday, April 13-Monday, June 8, 2015 (16 classes, 9 weeks, allowing for no class on Victoria Day, May 18, 2015)
Program hours: 10:00-12:00 pm
Staff hours: 9:30 am- 12:30 pm
Program runs Mondays and Tuesday mornings for nine weeks. (16 classes)
This is a part time, 10- week fee for service contract beginning Tuesday, April 7, 2015.
Contract amount: $ 850.00.
