PROJECT READ LITERACY NETWORK
Short term, hourly paid Contract Positions
PROGRAM FACILITATOR:
GET SET LEARN Family Literacy Program
Project READ Literacy Network is seeking energetic, compassionate and creative individuals to facilitate its Get Set Learn Family Literacy Program. This contract position is 12 hours per week for 14 weeks. Two positions are available. The Family Literacy Program Facilitator reports to the Family Literacy Manager.
Get Set Learn is an interactive family literacy program focused on lower income/lower literate parents and their preschool children (birth to six). GSL seeks to develop parents’ skills and confidence to foster early literacy and math skills in their children. The program helps both parents and children prepare for and become successful in school and education.
Tasks & Responsibilities
 Prepare all aspects of the program including contact with and support of participants, lesson and activity planning, group facilitation and materials preparation
 Respond to the facilitation needs and unique group dynamics of each class to meet learning outcomes
 Liaise with location staff to ensure positive relationships and smooth program delivery
 Work with the Manager to help promote the program in the community
 Work in cooperation with all Project READ staff and/or volunteers as needed to accomplish tasks
 Attend professional development opportunities as requested/suggested by Manager and/or Project READ Executive Director
Qualifications
 Min. of 2 years’ experience in adult literacy/ ESL instruction/adult education
 Experience working with marginalized families
 Experience facilitating large and small groups and various ages
 Experience in family literacy or parent/child program facilitation is preferred
 Knowledge of assessment and evaluation of student progress and program evaluation an asset
 Knowledge of early literacy and/or child development
 Excellent communications skills - written and oral
 Creativity, enthusiasm, empathy and collaboration
 Avid reader and life-long learner willing to research new resources & approaches
 Post-secondary education/training or equivalent practical experience required
 Family Literacy Practitioner Certificate an asset
 Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of conflict resolution
 Ability and confidence to complete tasks independently and demonstrate initiative
 Comfortable with multi-tasking and setting priorities to complete job tasks
 Good computer skills - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), Google Drive, Email and Internet
 Access to reliable transportation is absolutely necessary to travel to the program location
 Acceptable Vulnerable Sector Records check

FUNCTION: To supervise a team of day camp counselors in the delivery of day camping programs and services that ensure opportunities for learning and growth that adheres to and promotes YMCA mission, vision and values.
 
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • To act as a team leader to direct, support, and assist other team members in the delivery of excellent programming
  • To plan and deliver programs for day camp participants following YMCA objectives
  • To demonstrate energy, dedication and enthusiasm and to appreciate and support YMCA values, mission and vision

QUALIFICATIONS:

YOUTH WORKER I

The Youth Worker will plan, organize and deliver a calendar of structured and informal discussions and activities for YWCA Story Sheroes, a program for girls that promotes social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth, while exploring topics relevant to self-esteem, body image, self-identity and expression through literacy while enhancing their reading and writing skills.
 
Qualifications:
  • Degree or diploma in the Human Service, English or Education field.
  • Work experience with youth, developing and facilitating literacy based programming.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring youth on reading and writing would be an asset.
  • Awareness of issues and community resources relevant to pre-teen and teenage girls.
  • Creativity and skill in researching relevant activities to provide diversity in programming.
  • Working knowledge of program evaluation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with and liaison with multiple stakeholders, including program participants, parents, library staff, guest facilitators, etc.
  • Tolerance of Ambiguity and the ability to be able to change tasks or directions with ease, make back up plans, and explore new ways of delivering programming.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to complete planning and facilitation work independently
  • Current standard first aid and C.P.R. certification.
 
Rate of Pay:        $20.135 per hour, with an additional 2% in lieu of benefits
Hours:                6 hours per week (1 2-hour evening session per week, 4 hours program planning per week)

YWCA Kitchener-Waterloo is a multi-service charitable organization providing emergency and supportive housing for women and families and services to children and youth.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Takes a leadership role in planning,  implementation and evaluation of the YWCAs public and media relations strategies, including the association’s social media campaign
  • Writes, edits and coordinates layout and design of presentation displays, publicity materials, media releases, newsletters and articles
  • Conducts community presentations and fosters media relations
  • Coordinates ongoing development and updates the association’s website
 
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of communication systems and processes, public and media relations, project management, and graphic design and print production processes, normally acquired through the attainment of a community college diploma or a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or other related discipline
  • Minimum of three years related work experience in the non-profit sector
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
