COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST (CONTRACT) JP108-2016
 
EMPLOYED BY:       Kitchener-Waterloo YMCA
SERVICE AREA:       Community Initiatives
POSITION:               Community Development Specialist (Newcomer Pathway to Belonging Project)
LOCATION:              Kitchener-Waterloo
REPORTS TO:          Director, Community Relations
HOURS:                   Fixed Term (September 2016 to August 2017), Full Time (evenings & weekends as required)
SALARY:                                  $18.19 per hour
START DATE:          September 2016
 
FUNCTION: Develop and facilitate newcomer youth connections using a Community Development framework and Navigator model.   Be the connection point between newcomer youth, communities and existing programs in schools, YMCA, neighbourhoods and the larger community with the goal of improving sense of belonging.
 
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Connect with communities where newcomer youth live, work, play and learn.
  • Create a response to the identified skills, assets, issues and needs of individual newcomer youth.
  • Provide opportunities for newcomer youth voice
  • Develop resources and practices that support newcomer youth
  • Build links with other groups and agencies
  • Maintain an ongoing record of project
  • Maintain statistics
  • Prepare reports
  • Develop and implement strategies that facilitate newcomer youth connections.
  • Maintain and develop positive interactions through direct involvement supported by strong verbal and written communication
  • Develop/modify and prioritize program information packages as required
  • Develop and co-ordinate awareness and education programs as required
  • Provide and facilitate guidance and assistance with program start-up
  • Recruit, train and support volunteers
  • Plan, attend and coordinate meetings and events
  • Oversee project budget
  • Promote the program through attendance at speaking engagements, newspaper articles and related publications
  • Work collaboratively with YMCA staff and community partners
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of University degree in a related field of study
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with youth community relations/innovative youth engagement approaches (ex.    
         New Canadians, Disengaged Youth, Youth Justice)
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check

Problem Solving: Identifies an issue and works towards a solution.
Tolerance for Ambiguity: Functions effectively in situations of less than perfect or incomplete information.
