Position: Hourly contract position at 30-37.5 hours per week, for 7 weeks. Contract will be from June 2018 – August, 2018 (camp runs from July 3 – August 10)
Compensation: $15.00/hour
Key Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one with a camper (varying exceptionalities including, but not limited to: ADHD, ODD, Cerebral Palsy, behaviour challenges, Autism Spectrum Disorder, physical disabilities, etc)
- Provide support to camper(s) as assigned by the Program Coordinator (can include feeding and toileting)
- Participate in all camp activities with camper
- Assist campers, workers and staff with daily routines of camp
- Identify means of adapting program activities to facilitate maximum participation of each child; share and discuss program adaptations with all staff/volunteers
- Communicate with parents/caregivers of campers on a daily basis
- Meet with families of children identified as having special needs, (if requested by the Program Coordinator)
- Attend any specified training related to employment, including inclusion training; read and understand all training materials. Attend all staff meetings.
- Research and prepare information on needs of campers, as requested by the Program Coordinator
- In co-operation with the Summer Fun Camp Coordinator and Program Coordinator, implement a high quality, fun and engaging day camp program of varied activities, taking into account the age of the participants, outdoor play and safety factors.
- Encourage and support an inclusive and respectful atmosphere for all campers
- Ensure the care, safety and security of day campers at all times
- Supervise and participate in onsite and offsite activities including swimming, field trips, physical activity, experiments, art activities, songs, and games
- Be a helpful, positive and engaged member of the HVNA staff team
- Maintain direct communication with the Summer Fun Camp Coordinator and Program Coordinator
- Maintain safe and tidy conditions at the program site, both outdoors and indoors.
- Other duties at the discretion of the Program Cooridnator
Skills:
- Enthusiasm for hands-on, experiential learning
- Previous experience working with children. Previous day camp experience is an asset
- Previous experience working with children with varying needs, or as a 1-on-1 inclusion counsellor an asset
- Specific interest or expertise in working with children with special needs
- Demonstrated expertise and interest in providing playful, engaging experiences for children
- Previous experience in leadership an asset
- Excellent time management skills, and ability to work both independently and within a team
- Strong verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills
Position Requirements:
- Child & Infant First Aid and CPR training - AED trained
- Valid police check
- Be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the immigration and refugee protection act
- Legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations
- HIGH FIVE® certification
- LEAD certification
